Civil War Wives

http://shetlandartsandcrafts.co.uk/ninian-1/ This title is from my Annual Book List.
I had heard so much about the men of the Civil War but knew next to nothing of the women and their experiences. This book helped rectify that.

Sitting down with a glass of iced tea to sip, I expected a historical tome, but was pleasantly surprised with its easy reading style & I felt pulled into each woman’s life and experiences.

Civil War Wives tells about the lives and times of Angelina Grimke Weld,  Varina Howell Davis & Julia Dent Grant.

Book&minticedtea

For Civil War buffs, two of those names are ringing bells already.  V. Davis was the President of the Confederacy’s wife and J. Grant is none other than General and future President Grant’s wife.
These were the two stories that captured me the most.

Both fascinating women with night and day personalities and upbringings. But both would go on to be wife to powerful, influential men at an impactful time in history.
My favorite part & one that I had never heard of in AP History class, is that they met later in life on several occasions after the war had ended.

The book narrates their lives with historical context, snippets of their own words, but reads easily like a memoir.

I plan to read other titles by Carol Berkin in the future.

Here is a quote I copied from the portion on Varina Howell Davis–

“Oh, how I would like to be free from care for a few days if only to know how it would feel, if I should not have to lose the objects of those cares.  Cares do wear out one’s youth.”

This book is excellent when read while sipping Iced Tea with sprigs of mint. 🙂

2015 Book List

A few years back I discovered that I was a –Fiction Snob! ( gasp )

I tended to gravitate towards fiction books more than any other genre.
Which is not a bad thing. Especially when I considered the toddlers, naptime chaos and tantrums I experienced on a daily basis.

I needed the escape fiction gave.

But as my children grew older, I felt ready to have topics or information to ponder and mull over. So I began forming an Annual Book List.

The Annual Book List was made up of non fiction, biographies, or topical titles. All choices were relatable to my interests or season of life.

I still kept up my fiction addiction, but these lists gave me a measure of accountability.

Each month I would select a title from the list & read. Fast forward many, many years and the annual book list is still going strong.

Here is the list I am working on now~

Do you make a Book List?

Me & My Book Reading Style

I am a Booksipper.

I read and drink tea. (a lot )

But what kinds of things do I read?

I am a fiction fanatic!
I love a good story. A story that draws you in and you can't put down.  I want very little drama and suspense -real life gives me enough of that!

But to keep my mind sharp I began a yearly nonfiction list.  And come to find out, there are all kinds of great nonfiction books too!

I have read loads of amazing children's books to my kiddos over the years.
Homeschooling has added countless books to our piles.

I read books to learn how to do things.  I have learned so much about essential oils, cooking and homesteading.

Really, I will read just about anything!
It's all about my mood, and the amount of time I have to settle in with a sippable beverage and my latest read.

All things sippable

When I curl up with a book, my sippable beverage of choice is ~ TEA!
